2010-2011 Year In Review
Letter from the President/CEO
Dear Friends:
What a landmark year it has been for Hennepin Theatre Trust. Our organization celebrated significant changes and success in its role as a Twin Cities cultural leader. Despite challenging economic times, it was a year of achievement and I am proud of our many accomplishments, especially the adoption of a new strategic plan centered on community cultural development.
Our achievements owe a great deal to many supporters and hundreds of stakeholders who offered opinions that guided a strategic vision that mapped our organization’s growth and defined our role in establishing Hennepin Avenue as the cultural heart of our city. We have broadened our focus and stepped forward with more visible, assertive and entrepreneurial leadership. Our plan encompassed connecting patrons and young people with meaningful learning experiences, opening our theatres as welcoming gathering places for many different audiences to experience a rich mix of programs and supporting the revitalization of downtown Minneapolis. Our strategic vision led to the exciting establishment of the New Century Theatre, a flexible use performance space located next to our relocated offices in City Center. The New Century allowed us to host more local theatre, longer-running comedies and our own educational programs. Click here to learn more about this venue.
With this broader focus, our reinvigorated development team worked to secure needed resources and support for expanded current and future programs. We are humbled by the response of our community. Many contributors increased their donations; 80% of our Donors renewed in 2010-11, with a 15% increase in Donors related to greater emphasis on improved Donor experiences and more benefits. We especially thank Donors Fred and Ann Moore and Steve and Barbara Cossack who were major supporters of our Critical View and SpotLight Musical Theatre educational programs. Click here for a link to our Resource Development Overview and Donor Listings.
The Trust also strengthened its connections with the philanthropic community. We increased our applications for foundation grants and built partnerships with TCF Bank, Best Buy Children’s Foundation and Target Corporation, in addition to nurturing sponsorships by Sun Country Airlines, Dunn Bros. Coffee, Phillips Distilling and Summit Brewing Company. We are particularly pleased to end the year with a balanced budget, not an easy achievement these days. To reach our goals, we continued to work closely with our Minneapolis business partners, including the Downtown Improvement District, which I chaired for a second year, and the Minneapolis Downtown Council. Click here for a link to our Financial Report.
We embraced our new role as a convener of and gateway to the larger artistic community by welcoming more than 515,000 people to our historic theatres. By attending performances, participating in our educational programs and supporting us by word-of-mouth and with your dollars, you have enabled Hennepin Theatre Trust to positively impact our community and foster statewide cultural vitality. Please accept our heartfelt “Thank you!” We look forward to discovering further opportunities to engage, inform and entertain you, your family and your friends.
With Gratitude,

Thomas L. Hoch, President/CEO
Letter from the Board Chair
Dear Friends:
I was privileged in 2010-11 to continue to serve as Chair of Hennepin Theatre Trust, one of the most dynamic and forward thinking organizations operating today. This year, we engaged Twin Cities residents, visitors and our stakeholders by gathering their opinions to help us create our new strategic plan. Their input guided us to respond to what the community believes in, opened doors to greater possibilities and led us to become a better leader in making downtown Minneapolis a relevant, safe, inviting and invigorating place for everyone. This plan and your contributions throughout the year made it possible for us to engage both the young and the old in rich programming and informative experiences, transform a vacant space into a new, arts-focused gathering place and enhance the vibrant cultural atmosphere of the Twin Cities. Thank you.
This year, our Education and Community Engagement Programs touched even more individuals. Our free ticket Access Program invited a broader range of people to experience live entertainment. Through Critical View, 28 student reviewers learned analytical thinking and improved their writing skills. Our SpotLight Musical Theatre Program, now in its sixth year, connected with nearly 4,500 students and their families, representing 40 metro and seven greater Minnesota schools; we also expanded statewide to serve the next generation of artists through innovative video classes. The sold-out SpotLight Showcase highlighted the abundant talents of nearly 1,000 young performers on the Orpheum Stage. Two of our SpotLight students, Sarah Cartwright of Eastview High School and Ryan McCartan of Minnetonka High School, realized their dreams when they traveled to New York City to participate in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, with Ryan taking home the Jimmy Award for Best Actor and a $10,000 scholarship! This was an honor we all shared with him. I invite you to Click here to read more about our Education and Community Engagement achievements.
Last year more than half a million community members came through our doors, each one adding to our thriving cultural environment. Our programming reached diverse patrons who reveled in Broadway tours such as the inspiring Minnesota debut of the Tony Award winning Billy Elliot, and the unprecedented Wizard of Oz prequel, Wicked. Audiences cheered when Elvis Costello and David Sedaris graced the State Theatre stage and relished an evening of song with Sara Bareilles in the intimate Pantages. Girls Only: The Secret Comedy of Women and Santaland Diaries left audiences smiling during our final year of Hennepin Stages programming. Click here to read a Performance Overview.
We did more than ever this past year to offer information interactively and through popular social media sites. The response has been gratifying as we welcomed more than one million online visitors. Our “Weekly” email connected 250,000 people with insightful information about our activities and the Trust’s monthly Insider newsletter brought behind-the-scenes stories to 9,000 active readers.
On behalf of the Hennepin Theatre Trust Board and Staff, thank you for inviting us to be a part of your life and supporting our vision this year. You honored us by walking through our doors to experience the joy of live entertainment and participate in establishing Minneapolis as the most respected arts-inspired cultural community in the country.
Warm Regards,

Education and Community Engagement Overview 2011
Hennepin Theatre Trust has embraced an invigorating future that reflects our community’s evolving diversity and creativity, convening many citizens to participate, support and share the benefits of a vibrant cultural community. Our Educational and Community Engagement programs are central to this vision, nurturing artistic vitality in our city, fostering cooperation through shared experiences and providing valuable resources for students and adults seeking to deepen their understanding of live theatre and hone their potential as actors, technicians, reviewers, promoters, administrators or audience members. Throughout the year, we offered a multitude of opportunities for young people to pursue artistic dreams and acquire real life skills including public speaking, memorization, critical thinking and writing.
We continued to throw open the doors of our theatres to welcome a broad community of young people, adults and families. Free tickets through our Access Program made our shows more accessible to a broader range of community members including families in hardship or individuals fighting long-term illness. Our Theatre Tours inspired an appreciation for Hennepin Avenue's long and storied history as our region's entertainment hub and the pleasure of seeing beautifully restored architectural buildings that have welcomed generations of theatregoers.
Program Highlights
SpotLight Musical Theatre Program
- In its sixth year, our SpotLight Musical Theatre Program, the Trust’s flagship educational initiative that supports and celebrates young people in high school musical theatre programs, served 4,500 students in 47 schools - 40 in the metro area and seven in greater Minnesota.
- We reached more than 65 students with specialized and intensive musical theatre instruction from top Twin Cities' arts professionals at workshops offered at the SpotLight Annual Conference in March and throughout the year.
- On June 6th, we celebrated the talents of nearly 1,000 students who performed in the sold-out SpotLight Showcase on the Orpheum Theatre stage, with 24 local artistic directors, press, performers, Donors and community members recognizing these students on stage.
- Our SpotLight Showcase social media coverage featured a live TwitterCast that posted 57 live tweets and 16 TwitPics with 645 views.
- Sarah Cartwright of Eastview High School in Apple Valley and Ryan McCartan of Minnetonka High School participated in SpotLight and represented us at the National High School Musical Theatre Awards in New York City with travel courtesy of Sun Country Airlines. McCartan took home the Jimmy Award for Best Actor, a $10,000 scholarship and national recognition.
- Linda Eder, the internationally acclaimed Broadway actress and vocalist, supported our efforts by serving as the SpotLight Spokesperson and students learned from her during a master class and when they performed alongside her at Eder's December Pantages concert.
- Our new summer SpotLight Cabaret Series gave 31 students the opportunity to direct a production from conception to performance.
Distance Learning Initiative
- Our Distance Learning Initiative developed innovative interactive videoconferencing technology to reach approximately 350 students in their home schools throughout Minnesota. Professional theatre artists, including Linda Eder, taught 13 musical theatre workshops.
Broadway Show Engagement
- More than 80 students from throughout our community, including young people from Washburn, Eastview and Minnetonka High Schools, learned from the pros in the Broadway touring casts through a dance workshop during Billy Elliot, a technical crew ‘talk back’ during Jersey Boys and Hair, and a master class for SpotLight Cabaret students during West Side Story.
Critical View
- Twenty eight students learned critical thinking and language arts skills through our Critical View student reviewer program, now in its seventh year. Youth from FAIR Downtown School, the Main Street School of Performing Arts, and DeLaSalle, Southwest, South and Benilde-St. Margaret’s High Schools had the chance to review seven Broadway touring shows, take workshops taught by area critics and theatre professionals and tour the WCCO TV studio and the Orpheum Theatre. Trust Donors Fred and Ann Moore renewed their financial support for the series.
Teen Ushers
- Our Teen Usher Program enabled eleven students to gain valuable on the job skills by working with the public and insights into career options through interaction with theatre professionals.
Access Program
- Through our Access Program, we were able to open our theatre doors wider by partnering with more than 30 social service and educational groups to give 6,246 tickets valued at $311,800 to many underserved members of our community who might not otherwise have the chance to experience the joy of live entertainment.
Broadway Confidential
- Broadway Confidential delivered adult patrons a deeper perspective about the Broadway musicals on our stages by engaging them in talks with knowledgeable speakers including professors, artists and theatre directors who shared insights about British industry prior to Billy Elliot and the cultural revolution before Hair.
The Scene
- Our young professionals group, The Scene, developed a new strategic plan to further engage members, hosted a post-show party with the Rock of Ages cast, threw a Hair related Age of Aquarius party and organized a Broadway inspired fashion show, creating a form of engagement to reach younger audiences from across the metro area.
Volunteer Program
- Our exceptional cadre of volunteers surpassed 300 people, enabling us to better and more personally serve our community at a wide range of events and activities.
Kids’ Night
- Nearly 300 children and parents joined us for Kids’ Night at Shrek, donning free green Shrek ears and enjoying a three-theatre scavenger hunt and ticket specials.
Theatre Tours
- In 2010-11, 60 invididual tours of our venues gave people a chance to learn about the rich and colorful history of the Orpheum, State and Pantages Theatres. There was so much demand that we even added another monthly tour on Saturday!

Performance Overview 2011
Hennepin Theatre Trust’s historic theatres are the irreplaceable heart of our city’s creative cultural space. Our programming created a tapestry of arts experiences that increased awareness of the Trust and enhanced the vibrant cultural environment of the Twin Cities.
In addition to the excitement of hosting some of the best Broadway touring shows in the country, our rich array of music, comedy, engaging speakers and theatre programs offered something for everyone and continued to provide a gateway to our city’s robust artistic community.
On-Stage Highlights 2011
- We brought 128 Broadway performances (compared with 87 last year) and 198 non-Broadway shows (78 last year), such as music, comedy and speakers, to our stages.
- Audiences thronged to the Orpheum for the Minnesota debut of Billy Elliot, the inspiring story about a blue collar boy who loved to dance, which won ten 2009 Tony Awards and was named Time’s “Best Musical of the Decade.”
- Jersey Boys, the Tony, Grammy and Olivier Award-winning hit musical about Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, had the crowds singing along in its anticipated return to the Orpheum.
- Wicked, Broadway’s biggest blockbuster, continued to be embraced by Minnesotans who came from all over the state to pack the Orpheum from August to September.
- We entertained crowds of music fans when Elvis Costello and Jackson Browne, two Rock n’ Roll icons, displayed their acclaimed talents at the State Theatre, with Costello’s fans on stage spinning a massive 12-foot wheel to pick his songs.
- Sara Bareilles, the popular singer-songwriter, charmed a sold-out crowd with an intimate performance at the Pantages Theatre.
- David Sedaris and Lily Tomlin, two of the nation’s foremost humorists, had audiences laughing uproariously at the State.
Special Programming-related Partnerships:
- The Trust continued to collaborate with local companies and built new audiences including a successful partnership with Theatre Latté Da and Cantus for the fourth annual return to the Pantages of All Is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914, which has become a new holiday classic.
- Our management of Hennepin Stages ended this year with audiences wholeheartedly laughing to such comedies as A Don’t Hug Me Christmas Carol, Girls Only: The Secret Comedy of Women, Santaland Diaries and Bye Bye Liver.
Hennepin Avenue Revitalization
- The Trust hosted a first-ever Ghosts of the Orpheum event in October, celebrating the Orpheum Theatre’s colorful history with interactive theatre tours, performances, visits from the “spirits” and an exhibition of private Vaudeville photographs.
- We constructed five new Minnesota Walk of Fame stars honoring Judy Garland, Jessica Lange, James Arness, Vince Vaughn and Bob Dylan. Dylan’s star was celebrated at a Dakota Jazz Club tribute concert and Vaughn’s was presented to him by Mayor R.T. Rybak. Others are scheduled for recognition this coming year.
- We made downtown a better place to live, work and play by our ongoing active support of the Minneapolis Downtown Improvement District and our membership in the Minneapolis Downtown Council including involvement in development of the Minneapolis 2025 Plan.

Resource Development Overview 2011
- Hennepin Theatre Trust ended the fiscal year with a balanced budget and we are poised to continue our growth.
- We aggressively increased corporate partnerships, sponsorships and grants. We're proud of our growing number of Donors and our 80% renewal rate for Donors.
- Modest increases in staffing supported the organization’s growth; at fiscal year-end there were 18 full time employees, compared to 14.8 last year, with increases in development, education and community engagement, administration and finance, marketing and New Century Theatre management.
- With the hiring of a new Development Director, we created a new revenue development plan to enable our supporters to better understand our needs and to expand opportunities for increased contributed income. We also hired an event planner to oversee a major benefit gala and soon will be joined by a major gifts officer and a grant writer.
