There is much more to a musical than the song and dance onstage – musicals ask profound questions and provide a glimpse into American history and culture. Broadway Confidential is a new series of engagements, designed by Hennepin Theatre Trust, to answer these questions and provide a deeper understanding of the material you see onstage.
All Broadway Confidential talks are held at the New Century Theatre located at 615 Hennepin Ave in City Center. They are held on the Monday before each Broadway show run from 5:30-7:00PM. Drinks will be available for purchase. Each engagement costs $15. buy TICKETS!

Disney's The Lion King: Animation to Theatre January 9, 2012 Steven Meerdink, Co-founder and artistic director for Minneapolis Musical Theatre, will lead an fun lecture on what it takes to bring an animated movie to life on the stage. He will talk about the various methods different theatrical directors have used in order to successfully transform the movie to the stage. American Idiot: The Roots of Punk Rock February 20, 2012 Stephen T. McClellan, Professor of Music Business at McNally Smith and former general manager of First Avenue for 32 years, will discuss the history of the punk music genre (including local and nationally influential acts) that inspired Green Day to lead the revived punk music scene in the 90s and early 2000s. buy tickets! |

Les Misérables: Art and Literature of Revolutionary France December 5, 2011 Lydia Belatèche, Ph.D., President of the Minnesota Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of French, Instructor at Hamline University and Senior Lecturer at the University of Minnesota, will lead an engaging discussion on the origins and popularity of the musical in France and other Francophone countries. Dr. Belatèche will highlight "le siècle des révolutions" (the century of revolutions, 1789-1889) comparing Hugo's portrayal of the lower classes to other portrayals by other well-known French authors of the 19th century. The lecture will also focus on artwork of the 19th century (for example, Delacroix's "Liberty Leading the People"). |
| La Cage Aux Folles: Evolution of the Transgender Culture October 17, 2011 Wanda Wisdom, Local Entertainer and Lavender Magazine contributor, will discuss the evolution of the transgender culture and demonstrate the transformation into “drag.” Wanda will be appearing with the help of her professional makeup artist and fellow drag entertainer Robb Grier (aka Bebe Gallini). |
