The season kicks off July 30 with the return of the 25th anniversary production of Cameron Mackintosh’s legendary Les Misérables, through August 4, 2013 at the Orpheum. With new staging and re-imagined scenery, this Boublil and Schönberg musical juggernaut has been hailed as “a five star hit, astonishingly powerful,” by The London Times. The spellbinding witches of Wicked also return for a six week run September 18–October 27 at the Orpheum. Called “the best musical of the decade” by Entertainment Weekly, this cultural phenomenon sold out three previous Minneapolis engagements and is still one of the most popular shows ever. The Minnesota debuts land November 19–24 when We Will Rock You rolls into the Orpheum. With 24 of British rock band Queen’s biggest hits, this guitar-thrashing, leather-clad musical boasts the same scale and spectacle that marked the group’s legendary live performances.
The new 25th anniversary production of The Phantom of the Opera, the longest running show in Broadway history, will take center stage at the Orpheum, December 13–January 5. This phenomenal Andrew Lloyd Webber musical success was hailed as “stunning, intense and spectacular” by the Sunday Express. Cabaret, the second production in the Trust’s Broadway Re-Imagined series with Theater Latté Da, will debut at the Pantages Theatre, January 22–February 16. Journey into the heart of 1930s’ Berlin to experience Peter Rothstein’s innovative re-imagining of an entertaining and poignant work boasting such classics as “Willkommen,” “Maybe This Time” and, of course, “Cabaret.”
The sultry Evita begins her ambitious journey during the new year January 28–February 2, 2014 at the Orpheum. Telling the unforgettable true story of Eva Perón and her meteoric rise from the slums of Argentina to Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Tony Award-winning music, Evita showcases such song stunners as “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina,” “Another Suitcase in Another Hall” and “High Flying, Adored.” The perennially popular Mamma Mia! returns February 18–23 to the Orpheum Theatre. This ultimate feel-good show has audiences coming back again and again to relive the thrill of the smash hit musical combining ABBA’s greatest hits with a tropical tale of love and laughter.
Peter and the Starcatcher, winner of five Tony Awards, makes its Minnesota debut at the Orpheum, March 11–16, 2014. A wildly theatrical, hilarious and innovative retelling of how a miserable orphan came to be The Boy Who Never Grew Up, this ingenious new production takes you to Neverland to upend the century-old legend of Peter Pan. Spring also brings the Minnesota debut of the 2012 Tony Award-winner for Best Musical as Once graces the stage of the Orpheum April 1–6. With an impressive ensemble of actor/musicians onstage, this emotionally captivating theatrical experience tells the beguiling tale of a Dublin street musician who is about to give up on his dreams when a beautiful young woman takes a sudden interest in his haunting love songs.
Musical fans can join the chorus when Sister Act energizes the Orpheum May 6–11. Called “ridiculously fun” by the New York Post, this sparkling tribute to the universal power of friendship includes original music by eight-time Oscar winner Alan Menken. The season concludes as Ghost The Musical invites you to relive the iconic and compelling moments from the Oscar-winning movie, June 17–22. With an original pop score from multiple Grammy Award-winners Dave Stewart, one half of the ‘80s pop duo The Eurythmics, and Glen Ballard, co-writer with Alanis Morissette on the multi-platinum album “Jagged Little Pill,” the musical was adapted from the hit film by its Academy Award-winning screenwriter Bruce Joel Rubin.
