The provocative columnist’s talk will cover a wide range of topics, from his highly popular weekly features (appearing locally in City Pages) to Minnesota’s efforts to defeat the constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage. He will also respond to questions from the audience. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 9. Originally from Chicago, Dan Savage became a snarky Dear Abby for the sexually active with the creation of his advice column, “Savage Love,” in 1991. He published his first book, “Savage Love: Straight Answers from America’s Most Popular Sex Columnist,” in 1998 and is also the author of three other books. His newest work, “It Gets Better: Coming Out, Overcoming Bullying and Creating a Life Worth Living,” was released in 2011 and became a New York Times Bestseller.
Savage created the internet-based project “It Gets Better” in 2010 to help support gay teenagers, which asks people to make and upload short videos about their positive experiences in the LGBT community. Millions have viewed the photos and participated so far, including President Obama and music superstar Janet Jackson. Advertising Age called it one of the best social media campaigns of 2010. In July 2011, Dan Savage was named one of the “Power 50” by Out Magazine for the campaign’s tremendous impact on the LGBT community and was also selected as one of 2011’s “O Wow!” breakthrough achievers by O, The Oprah Magazine. In addition to writing his column, he is the editor of the Seattle-based alternative newspaper The Stranger and directs plays under the pen name Keenan Hollahan.
