MINNEAPOLIS—Deer Camp–The Musical, the lighthearted Minnesotan comedy tracking the escapades of four lifelong buddies finally given the ultimatum by their wives to bring home a deer from Deer Camp, will play Hennepin Theatre Trust’s New Century Theatre, Sept. 14-30, 2012. Starring Tony Papenfuss and John Voldstad, best known for their roles as My Brother Darryl and My Other Brother Darryl in the 80s CBS sitcom “Newhart,” this blaze orange-tinged musical features songs such as “River of Brew” and “Grunt Horn Song” and also includes veteran Twin Cities actors John Kunik and Anthony Zandra. Deer Camp is presented by Hennepin Theatre Trust. Performances run Wednesday-Sunday and general admission tickets go on sale at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 15. Discounts are available for groups, students, seniors and military members. For tickets and information visit www.HennepinTheatreTrust.org or call 1.800.982.2787.
Deer Camp features four fearless and feckless hunters from Elmwood on their annual trek to Deer Camp. Things are looking bleak this season. After decades of “hunting” trips, the guys have yet to bring home a single deer, and the wives are getting suspicious. This season the friends have been given an ultimatum–“bring home a deer or else…” The challenge is drinking beer and hanging out in the deer shack is more appealing than freezing in a hunting stand. The quartet hatches a plan to save their hunting paradise without ever firing a shot.
Written by Gene Jurek with music by Doug Spartz, Deer Camp features direction by Ross Young and is produced by Michael Dunne, managing partner of Creators for Public Entertainment. It premiered at the Pioneer Place Theatre in St. Cloud in August 2007 and was performed at the Lowry Theatre in St. Paul in 2008 and 2009.
